Student volunteering: a key to personal development and social responsibility
Want to do more than just take part in events?
You're thinking about joining btS, but you're wondering: how does it actually work? The answer: it's very straightforward - and there are lots of opportunities for you to develop personally and professionally.
Entry usually begins at your own university location. Perhaps by attending an event or making contact with active members. You can always find the current date of the next meeting on the website of the individual btS locations. You can simply drop by there without obligation. You may quickly get the chance to join the local team - whether it's social media, contact with companies or event organization.
Those who want to go deeper can get involved in nationwide project teams - for example at ScieCon, the btS careers fair, or at the btS weekend. This involves teamwork across locations, project management and creative ideas. A further step could be to take on a management role - for example in a project team or as part of the local board. This is where you can learn to lead teams, coordinate processes and strategically align the association.
You also have the opportunity to work on specific topics in working groups - e.g. data protection, finance or marketing. Here, too, you can expand your skills, provide new impetus or grow into leadership roles.
Some members then take on responsibility on the National Board - they help shape the btS at a strategic level and develop the association together with others.
The new opportunities that have opened up for me and the people I've met - I wouldn't have experienced so much without btS. I originally joined for the CV and to get a better transition into working life. But I stayed because I enjoyed the projects, got to know lots of cool people and was able to develop myself further at btS.

From my own time as a student and my involvement in a student initiative, I know how many soft and hard skills you can learn in the process. That's why we support the work of btS - and were overwhelmed by the response at ScieCon. There were lots of questions, ideas and a desire to network. Admittedly, I've only known about btS since I've been in charge of the Life Science Research (LSR) department at the Association of the Diagnostics Industry (VDGH), even though I studied biology at LMU Munich!!! Now I know: I must have missed something! :) But I'm all the more pleased that the LSR companies and btS have been working together so well for so many years.
