Becoming a member of btS as a student or doctoral candidate is very easy:

  • Fill out our digital membership application (in german only!) which includes the direct debit authorization.
  • Once you have submitted the completed form, you will then receive an email confirming receipt of your application. Within four weeks, you will get a response from our membership administration, notifying you of your acceptance as a member.
  • Do you want to get started with your commitment right away? Then just reach out to your nearest btS local group and join one of the upcoming meetings.

Our membership fee is only 45 €/year. You can find our statutes and general rules of procedure here. This document is only available in German, so you will need to translate it on your own. Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us. The privacy policy for membership can be downloaded here.
Only enrolled students and PhD candidates are eligible to become full members of the btS – this will be verified if required. However, you always have the opportunity to become an extraordinary member.

Why should you become a member?

You can train yourself individually

You can develop your individual skills, not only through training and workshops, but also through practical experience.

Working within the btS team will allow you to enhance important soft skills such as planning and organizational skills, leading constructive discussions and presenting your own ideas.

    You make new contacts

During your studies, you have already established contacts within the professional world in both industry and academia throughout Germany. These diverse contacts you build, both within and outside btS, will remain as a personal network for a lifetime. As btS, we maintain long-standing partnerships with companies, and we are constantly making new connections.

      Try out new things

From small tasks such as designing flyers, organizing lectures or planning excursions to participating in nationwide working groups and holding positions such as local or even federal executive board member – we offer exciting tasks and new challenges for everyone.

Spark an excitement for student volunteering, not only within yourself, but also among your fellow students and future generations.

Within about four weeks, you will receive a response from our membership administration regarding your acceptance as a member. In the meantime, we welcome you to attend the meetings of our respective local btS team to get to know us better. To do this, you can either reach out to our membership administration (mitgliederverwaltung@bts-ev.de) or, alternatively, check out our website to find the nearest btS location: https://bts-ev.de/en/locations/uebersicht-der-geschaeftsstellen. Simply send a non-binding email to the contact address, that is provided on the respective website of the locations, to receive details regarding the date and location of the upcoming meeting. To facilitate the process of new members joining the btS, we also offer onboarding workshops approximately once per semester.

Any student or doctoral candidate can become a member. Since we are mainly active in the field of life sciences, an interest in the field is advantageous, but not a prerequisite. Additionally, there are multiple working groups within our organization that specifically focus on areas such as IT, finance, public relations, graphics, legal affairs, etc. and are therefore also of interest to non-scientists. No prior knowledge is required. You will acquire the necessary skills together with your team members and/or in seminars and workshops.

Membership for students or PhD candidates costs only €45/year.

After your studies, you can switch to an extraordinary membership (inactive) and support us financially with 85 €/year.

The direct debit always takes place at the end of January/beginning of February of the respective calendar year. If you become a member during the current calendar year, you will pay a portion of the membership fee based on the remaining months within that year.

We offer you numerous opportunities: From small tasks such as buying snacks for a lecture, organizing an event, contributing ideas, approaching potential cooperation partners, designing posters to holding board positions or participating in nationwide working groups and project teams (e.g. career fair organization) – you can try out everything, depending on your personal preferences, strengths and interests.

We organize various local and nationwide events, which you can (usually) attend free of charge: ScieCon career fairs, company presentations, excursions, "speed dating" with companies/alumni, soft skill workshops (e.g. on application topics) or scientific symposia. We are also working on projects regarding career guidance such as our career matching platform ScieMatch, our podcast ScieCast and our career blog.

How much time you can and want to invest in your volunteer work is entirely up to you. You decide, which projects you would like to contribute to and which tasks you would like to take on.

Local commitment: Most local groups hold meetings once or twice a month, usually lasting for 1 - 2 hours each. Depending on your capacities and preferences, you can also get involved in the organization of projects.

Nationwide commitment: Most nationwide working groups and project teams meet about once a month. Here, current strategies and projects are discussed, in which you can get involved individually however you like.

During the exam phase, things tend to be quieter, as most of our members are also focused on their exams at that time. If you have less time, you can often hand over your tasks to another team member. The important thing is to communicate this in advance so that we can then find a solution together.

Yes, you can become an associate member.

Your added value as an associate member:

        • Direct contact with universities and industries
        • Participation in networking events
        • You can advise the association and share your professional experience

To become an associate member of btS, send an email to our membership administration (mitgliederverwaltung@bts-ev.de) and request the membership application for associate membership.

The membership fee is 85 €/year. You can find our statutes and general rules of procedure here.

Once you have finished your studies or your doctorate, you should cancel your btS membership. However, your btS time does not end here: We will help you make a smooth transition to the btS Alumni e.V., where you can continue to stay in contact with us.

If you wish to cancel your membership for the following year, you can always do so by submitting a written request digitally by November 30th of the current year at mitgliederverwaltung@remove-this.bts-ev.de

You can cancel your membership by contacting the membership administration office mitgliederverwaltung[at]bts-ev.de at the earliest possible date or provide a termination notice by the end of the year. The deadline is always November 30th for the following year. Please note, that a pro rata refund of the membership fee is excluded, if the event of termination occurs within the current calendar year.
